If walking and gardens are your passion, then you won't be disappointed with the Roman Gardens Chester.
The gardens are named after some historical carved building fragments dating back to the Roman legionary fortress of Deva.
Back in 1949, the gardens were assembled so the city could display some of the ruins of Deva, the Roman Fortress.
You can find the famous Roman gardens just outside the Chester City Walls near the Newgate and just along the Chester Amphitheatre.
No charge to get into the gardens to experience the beautifully laid out design along with a good variety of plants. Pathways lined with original columns and stone benches to sit and reflect.
In the Summer
We love to pick up some sandwiches on a Summers's day, and find a place to sit amongst the artefacts of Roman History gone by.
If you are visiting to learn more about history, then why not take a tour with a guide dressed as an authentic soldier? Prices start at £10 per adult which we were quite happy to pay as you can learn so much about the Roman way of life.
You can book a tour and also find out more say if you are taking a group and need a price. Call 01244 402260 for a friendly chat or book a tour. If you have to cancel, there is no cancellation fee.
In the summer months, the gardens host some open-air cinemas called the Midnight Flicks and they are another great attraction that is free. I think that's why the gardens are so popular with everyone, they have a good all-round combination of interests to interest all ages.
What is in the area?
The gardens are pretty easy to find, just head down from Chester City Centre to the River Dee to find them, the Amphitheatre is just northeast of the gardens not far away. Maybe link both attractions together to make it a historical day out!
There are plenty of great eateries and pubs on Pepper Street including public car parking. The Park and Ride bus stop is also nearby if you have parked outside the city. If you get off the bus there, the gardens are just 2 minutes away.
Grosvenor Park is within easy reach and you can down to the Pleasure boats 5 mins away for a cruise along the River Dee or maybe take a spot of rowing. North of the gardens is the City Centre and all the big high street shops.
